Question from on 06-08-2007:

my son is Catholic and his wife was raised Baptist and are wanting to
come back to the church. She wants to know, where did the word Catholic
come from? I have already explained to her the mass and the rosary to
the best of my ability, but I don't know the answer to this one. HELP!

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 06-09-2007:

Dear Linda,

The word "Catholic" means
"universal" in Greek. It seems that it was used by St. Ignatius in the
second century to refer to the Christian Church.
