The Congregation for the Causes of Saints has issued a series of decrees, approved by Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) on June 1, advancing the causes of 136 candidates for canonization and beatification.


The decrees announced:


  • The
    recognition of miracles attributed to the intercession of two
    candidates who have already been beatified, and have now fulfilled the
    requirements for canonization. They are: Blessed Ann Muttathupandathu
    (1910-1946) of India and Blessed Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran (1833-
    1869) of Peru.


  • The recognition of miracles attributed to the intercession
    of four candidates who are now qualified for beatification. They are:
    Antonio Rosmini (1797- 1855) of Italy; Maria Merkert (1817- 1872) of
    Poland; Endrina Stenmanns (1852- 1903) of Germany; and Maria Anna
    Donati (1848- 1925) of Italy.

  • Recognition
    of the martyrdom of 123 candidates, who may also be scheduled for
    beatification. They are: Peter Kibe Kasui, a Jesuit of 17th-century
    Japan; Avellino Rodriguez Alonso and 97 companions who died in the
    Spanish civil war; Emmanuele Arriola Uranga and 22 companions, also
    killed in the Spanish civil war; and Francis Jagerstatter, who died in
    Germany during World War II.

  • Recognition
    of the "heroic virtue" of 7 candidates, who will now be eligible for
    beatification if a miracle is attributed to their intercession. They
    are: Giovanni Battista Arista of Italy, Alcide Lataste of France,
    Francesco Maria Perez of Italy, Luisa Lavizzari of Italy, Eleonora
    Margarita Weiss of Germany, Armida Barelli of Italy, and Cleonidle
    Guerra of Italy.
