Question from on 06-06-2007:
Dear Dr. Geraghty,
I recently heard a
protestant Bible scholar by the name of John MaCarthur who said that
God does not want to "hide" his Word, the Bible, but wants to reveal
himself. He said that man has a tendancy to think that the Bible is
obscure or difficult to understand that is why he comes up with
philosophy to go along with the Word. he also said that mystics also
add extra biblical revelation and this is what happens when one strays
away from the Bible or doesn't view it correctly. I know that he
obviously has a bigoted view of the Catholic church, but what got me
thinking was what he said about philosophy and how we use it to add or
give the Word of God a foundation when in fact, he says, we don't need
it because God meant to reveal himself. I took this as we think God is
hiding his Word and that is why we have to use philosophy. I am just
wondering what your thoughts are on his statement? Especially about the
use of philosophy.
Thank you and God bless you.
