Blessed Mary Question from on 05-22-2007: |
Is it not written somewhere that Mary our Mother once did laundry to help support the family? Was she not a working mother in a sense? Please advise to where I may obtain the answers to questions. Thank You |

It has no basis that I'm aware of in authoritative sources. Joseph probably didn't lack work, given the amount of building that was going on in that part of the country, and Jesus would have worked too, when He was of an age. But it's not an unreasonable supposition that Mary contributed in some way to the family income. Perhaps she wove clothes or sold vegetables from her garden. Whether she took in laundry seems doubtful to me, given the Jewish laws on ritual purity (cf. Lv 5:3). |
