Bringing the Bible to church

Bringing the Bible to church

Question from on 06-16-2007:

Why doesn't the Church suggest that Catholics bring their Bibles to
church and look up the readings so they can become familiar with the
Bible? They can do it at home before the Mass or at church. In this
way, they will become familiar with all the books and get to learn all
the books and how to access them. I am a cradle Catholic and a graduate
of Loyola University in New Orleans.

We
emphasize our traditions a lot, but we should encourage everyone to
know more of Scripture. I love my Bible and love it more every day. I
would love to see more Catholics appreciate the power of Scripture.

Calvin--

Most Catholics look up the
readings for the Mass in their missals or missalettes. Missals are
prayer books that contain all of the readings for every Sunday of the
year or for the daily Masses; missalettes are booklets that contain the
readings for the liturgical season and are provided by most parishes in
the pews. Catholics ordinarily bring their missals to church or use the
parish missalettes because the missals and missalettes contain not just
the Bible readings but the order of the Mass as well.
