Age for reception of Holy Communion

Age for reception of Holy Communion

Question from on 06-20-2007:

My daughter is 3 1/4 years old. She recognizes Jesus in the Eucharist,
understands that the Holy Spirit changes the bread and wine into the
body and blood of Jesus at the consecration, and has expressed a desire
to receive. I know that (in the Latin Church) it is only considered proper
for a child to first receive the sacrament of confession before receiving
the Eucharist, but I am wondering if there are ever any exceptions
permitted. If not, she will obviously need to wait, but if there is a
possibility of her being able to receive the Lord before reaching the age of
reason, I would like to take advantage of it. She is a very devout little girl,
and loves Jesus and the Blessed Mother. What is the very earliest that she
might be permitted to receive?

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 06-20-2007:

You are correct about the age of discretion/reason (about 7 years) being the age for the
reception of first Holy Communion in the Latin Church. This is the norm, although
exceptions can be made in danger of death situations, although I don't think that is what you
are asking about.
