ministry in church

Question from on 05-31-2007:

if there a difference when a layperson performs a ministry in the
church and can you call it also a ministry if you perform good deeds
outside the church, or just a plain service which could mean also a
ministry?

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 06-02-2007:

Restricting the use of the term "ministry" at this point is a little like trying to get the
toothpaste back into the tube.

"Sacred ministry" is restricted to ministry of the ordained -- i.e., bishops, priests, and
deacons.

"Ministry" and "service" in other uses basically mean the same thing, in terms of the historical
origins and meanings of the words.
