Water and wine

Question from Laudie Buresh on 12/16/2007:

What is the significance of the priest adding water to wine during the mass?

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 1/9/2008:

In the Mediterranean basin wine is generally diluted with water before drinking. This practice familiar to Our Lord, although reduced to a few drops of water in the Mass, has acquired a spiritual meaning, the mingling of the divine nature (wine) and human nature (water) in the One Person of Christ. As the prayer said by the priest at that time states,

"By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity."
