RE: Speaking in Tongues

Question from Anon too on 1/11/2008:

Fr. Levis-

Anon had a great question about speaking in tongues, but actually may be confusing terminology - What anon experienced was "praying in tongues" by the priest annointing and the two assisting. This is exercise of a personal gift, whereas "speaking in tongues", as you correctly pointed out is done for the benefit of the assembly (and should be followed by the gift of interpretation by another, or same individual, in the assembly.)

As far as why everyone is not open to these charisms, closer reading of 1 Cor chapters 12-14 may illuminate. They certainly are available to any baptized person in a state of grace who eagerly seeks them!

An oversimplification of why not everytone seeks these gifts may be - some folks like grits or liver, but you won't find them in my house!

Many blessings in your continued ministry to us seeking answers.

Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 1/11/2008:

Anon, I think yours is the first post to remind me of "praying in tongues" since most of my acquaintance is with "speaking in tongues". God bless you. Fr. Bob Levis
