Defending the Catholic Teachings of Mary

So Many of My Protestant friends don't understand why Catholics put so much emphasis on Mary. They say only Jesus was free from original sin and that she was not a perpetual virgin. They site the Bible verses; Mark 6:3, Matthew 12:46 and Luke 2:7. I need an indepth explanation of these verses and how to respond to these protestants so intent on downplaying Mary.
