Tabernacle Candle

Question from chris on 1/4/2008:

Dear Fr Levis

Sorry these are more liturgy questions then doctorine.

1. Is it permissable to have more then one sanctuary light. My parish runs a scheme to sponsor the candle for a week and now we have three sanctuary candles. Teh intention is good, but it seems over the top?

2. Can a single priest when asked to say a mass i.e. taking the stiped then say one mass for more the one intention, i.e. Mr Smith, Mr Jones RIP, Private intention?

Many thanks

chris

Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 1/4/2008:

Chris, Ordinarily one candles fulfills the requirement, but many candles often are so used. The priest who accepts a stipend for one Mass, he must under pain of serious sin, offer that Mass for that requested intention. If he receives, say, 5 stipends for five deceased people, he may not conjoin them with one Mass for all of them. This is a major error. Fr. Bob Levis
