End of Life Issues
Question from on 07-01-2007:
What does the church say about "Do Not Resusitate" and "Do Not Keep Alive via Artificial Means Other Than Hydration" (i.e. feeding tubes) directives?
I am in the process of creating a Living Will and a Medical Power of Attorney and would appreciate guidelines. Thank you.
Answer by Fr.Stephen F. Torraco on 07-02-2007:
A DNR order would be morally legitimate in the case of a person who is terminally ill. Any medical treatment that is able to accomplish its goal without imposing a disproportionate burden is considered obligatory.
