Pope will sail into Sydney Harbor for World Youth Day greeting

Sydney, Mar. 17, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will make his official arrival at World Youth Day by boat, organizers in Sydney have announced.

Although he will travel to Australia by plane, the Pontiff will be formally welcomed to the World Youth Day ceremonies when he cruises into Sydney harbor on July 17.

Bishop Anthony Fisher, the Sydney auxiliary who is the chief coordinator for the World Youth Day ceremonies, told reporters that he expects about 100,000 people to line the shore to greet the Pontiff.

The Pope will arrive on a large cruise ship, as part of a small flotilla. Bishop Fisher said that the boat could be seen as "a spectacular kind of popemobile." After landing in Sydney the Pope will then proceed through the city in a motorcade, he said.
