Recieving Communion

Question from M Throop on 3/20/2008:

May I receive communion if I am not married in the Church? I was married outside the Church.

Answer by Catholic Answers on 3/22/2008:
Hi,

If you are not married in the Church, the Church does not consider you to be validly married. So every time you have relations you are committing a mortal sin.

If neither of you has been divorced, it would not be a difficult matter to have your marriage blessed. If either of you has been divorced, you need to see a priest about the possibility of having the pevious marriage annuled. If you go to Confession you may receive Holy Communion if you and your husband refrain from relations until you are married in the Catholic Church. You are in my prayers.
