World Youth Day plans high-tech approach

Sydney, May. 8, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will send text messages to young people attending World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia in July.

Bishop Anthony Fisher, who is coordinating preparations for the events, told reporters that the gathering in Sydney will be "the most innovative World Youth Day to date." The bishop said that the text messages are part of an overall effort to "connect with today's tech-savvy youth."

Acknowledging that many young people communicate regularly by text messages, the organizers have planned for a daily inspirational message from the Holy Father. World Youth Day will also provide a social-networking site so that participants can remain in touch with each other, exchanging personal news and prayer requests, after the July event.
