Jewish Synagogue in New York

Jewish Synagogue in New York
Question from Curious on 5/7/2008:

Pope Benedict visited a synagogue in New York on his recent visit to our nation. During the ceremony, the drapes in the Jewish synagogue were pulled open. Our Holy Father stood up and turned to view the contents. After viewing them for a few seconds, the drapes were pulled back. Do you have any idea of what he saw and what is kept behind these drapes?

Thank you.
Answer by David Gregson on 5/19/2008:

I believe it's the ark, containing scrolls of the Torah (Law of Moses), reminiscent of the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments. This is the holiest place in a synagogue.
