KNEELING TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION?
Question from Troubled Soul on 5/12/2008:
Father, I have recently read in a private revelation (not yet accepted by the Holy See) something that deeply troubled me. What Jesus said there is that it is sacrilegious to receive Holy Communion standing. I know we are not obliged to believe in private revelation, esp. those not yet approved, but if we do, are we obliged to believe and obey EVERYTHING it says there? Secondly, I find it rather difficult to believe that Jesus could ever be so scrupolous about exterior signs, because He always reproaches farizees in the Gospel about those exterior signs they believed in. I thought what He really cares is the state of our soul and heart while we receive Him in Communion, whether we are in mortal sin or in the state of grace. I am, moreover, afraid the priest could deny me the Holy Communion. Please, help me!
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/12/2008:
While the norm for reception in the present time in the Ordinary form of the Mass is standing, preceeded by a bow, the Vatican allows that any faithful who wish may receive kneeling. I would not be displeased if the norms were one day changed to return to the traditional practice of kneeling for Holy Communion, as is done in the Extraordinary form of the Mass.
God bless,
Father Echert
