Is this verse for all christians or just catholics?

Was Saint Peter a Jew?
Question from Jim on 5/3/2008:

Dear Father, Was Peter a Jew? If he was, he became a christian when he believed and accepted what Jesus did on the cross for him. So in saying this, do you believe people who accept and believe in Jesus go to heaven?

Romans: 10 verse 9 says, If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Is this verse for all christians or just catholics?

Thanks, Jim
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/3/2008:

True Christians are Catholics. Saint Peter--and others like him--was Jewish by birth and properly so-called Jewish in the Old Covenant period but we properly call him Christian insofar as the New Covenant period of the Church. Sometimes the term Jewish-Christian is used to distinguish background from a Gentile-Christian (one who was non-Jewish in the early Church) but as Saint Paul notes, there is neither Jew nor Greek in such matters, but we are all one in Christ--as Christians.

Thanks, Jim

Father Echert
