Hand Cross in Confession
Question from Matt on 4/11/2008:
My question concerns the legitimacy and validity concerning the use of a hand crucifix during confession. In my particular case, a priest who celebrates mass in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms, heard my confession as I usually make it, gave me advice an penance and absolved me by tracing the sign of the cross with a Crucifix of St. Benedict in his rite hand? Is this a normal part of confessions in the traditional rite? If not, should I be concerned with the validity of the confession (the prayer of absolution was correct)?
Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 4/29/2008:
No, its a particular practice of this priest, and would have no bearing on the validity of the absolution. It sounds like he is merely combining a sacramental (blessing with the Benedict's medal) with absolution. However, any personal practice which confuses people probably should be foregone, as possibly detracting from the Scaramental Rite.
