Feast of the Assumption

Feast of the Assumption
Question from Jan on 4/29/2008:

Here we go again. Another holy day of obligation where there is no direction in our parishes or from the bishop as to when it will be celebrated in our diocese. In years past, when a holy day of obligation's celebration was moved to another day, there was at least some mention at Mass the Sunday before or a notice in the parish bulletin. Now, in our diocese, our bishop and our priests are completely silent! I am having to contact the diocese again as I did last year for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, to ascertain when the Feast of the Assumption will be celebrated. Are other dioceses out there as silent as ours?

Jan--

The Feast of the Assumption is August 15 and celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary's assumption into heaven. Since it is over three months away, my guess is that you are referring to the Feast of the Ascension, which celebrates Christ's ascent into heaven after his Resurrection. In most dioceses of the United States, the Feast of the Ascension has been moved to the nearest Sunday, which will be this coming Sunday, May 4. To find out if your diocese celebrates the Feast of the Ascension on the traditional date of Ascension Thursday (this year on May 1), you should indeed contact your local diocese.
