annointing of oil

Question from Mario on 2/18/2008:
A Brother in CHRIST attending a meeting where lay people, not extra ordineary ministers, where annointing with oil. He asked is this possible, are not Preist the only one that can annoint with oil? Please clarify.
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 2/18/2008:
Only priests and bishops can offer the Sacrament of Anointing. If lay people were anointing with oil, even if the correct oil, it would not be a Sacrament of the Church. And if this was a Catholic setting, it would be a wrongful act, I should think, as it gives the appearance of simulating a sacrament. What was the purpose of the anointing?

Thanks, Mario

Father Echert
