When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. (And) Jesus said to her, Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, Fill the jars with water. So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter. So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. -The 2nd Luminous Mystery

Question from GINA on 8/11/2008:

DEAR FR. GANTLEY, MY BROTHER IS CATHOLIC BUT WAS MARRIED IN AGLIPAYAN CHURCH OR PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENT CHURCH WHICH I BELIEVE IS IN FULL COMMUNION WITH THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES. FORGIVE MY IGNORANCE FATHER BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF MY BROTHER'S MARRIAGE IS VALID? THANK YOU.

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 8/11/2008:

No, your brother's marriage is invalid due to defect of form -- that is, he is a Catholic but did not get married in the Catholic Church.

Dear Fr. Gantley, i have a fiance whose having a problem with his baptismal certificate. One of the requirements of our church wedding is a recent baptismal certificate with a 6 months validity that says for "marriage purposes". Unfortunately, we cant find the church where he got baptized. Its name is "Our Mother of Perpetual Help-Oriental Catholic Church". We've been calling Archdiocese of San Jose since that Church is standing there when he was baptized year 1997. But they told us that, that church isnt one of their parishes. So Father, what should we do about it?

  2. Dear Father Gantley.

Me and my fiancee is getting married soon. However, when we checked her baptismal certificate, she was baptized in an Aglipayan church. She knew since a child that shes catholic. her mom is catholic and they went to catholic church to hear mass. She went to a catholic school and as far as she is concerned she is catholic. She is willing to be baptised in a catholic church but we dont know how to do it. May I ask what are the requirements for conversion or is there a need since catholics and aglipayan faith is almost the same? Thanks and regards.

  3. Dear Father,

I have a close friend who got married in an Aglipayan Church at age 18 and his wife was just 17 (only days left to become 18) because of pregnancy issues... they were both catholic and at the time of marriage the parents of his wife were not present but only the close relatives and friends.. now, it's been 12 years that they are not living together and my friend wants to get married again... I just want to know if the Catholic Church will allow him.. is the previous marriage still valid and legal? thanks....
