Question from Anon on 4/1/2008:
When did the Holy Spirit descend upon the Apostles? At Pentecost or when Jesus appeared after the crucifixion and breathed on them?
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 4/3/2008:
The appearance of Jesus to the Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of the Resurrection has often been described as a "mini-Pentecost" in that He breathed the Holy Spirit upon them initially, but later and more fully was the actual Pentecost (which name is derived from the formerly Jewish Feast which occured fifty days after Easter). That was the birthday of the Church and we see how active the gifts of the Spirit were immediately thereafter.
God bless,
Father Echert
