After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. -The 1st Luminous Mystery

Permanent Diaconate

Question from Jeff on 4/9/2008:

I was looking for information on the Permanent Diaconate, and found an argument that married Permanent Deacons must remain continent. This doesn't appear to be the case in practice, and I found a USCCB document that indicates that married Deacons need not remain continent.

Is there any official word from the Vatican? What is your interpretation of the law on this subject?

Thanks!

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 4/9/2008:
There is nothing in the present canon law of the Catholic Church that requires continence for married permanent deacons.

When I've answered this question before, I was inundated with arguments disagreeing with me, but I concluded that these arguments were incorrect.
