Reading of the Passion

Question from JLT on 4/2/2008:

During the past Easter week when the Passion was read during Mass everyone was requested to sit during the reading. I felt uncomfortable doing this and actually knelt during the reading. Is it proper to sit or was kneeling correct also. Thank you for your response.

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 4/2/2008:
Standing is the correct posture. Oh, how soft we have become in modern times. It seems the more "healthy" we become with modern medicine the more lax we become in our religious postures. To think that it is too much to ask for people to stand for ten minutes. Two days ago I stood in line at an airport for 45 minutes; no one sat in that line, I can tell you.

God bless,

Father Echert

PS Good for you for kneeling!
