Question from Clement Cleveland on 3/29/2008:
Our priest insist upon using leaded crystal challises. At a K of C service, we asked that he use the gold challis which we provided. He insists that it is proper for him to use the glass challis. What is the correct answer? Thank you . . .
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 3/31/2008:
Glass vessels are not permitted.
The Instruction on the Eucharist Redemptionis Sacramentum #117, issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, states: "Reprobated, therefore, is any practice of using for the celebration of Mass common vessels, or others lacking in quality, or devoid of all artistic merit or which are mere containers, as also other vessels made from glass, earthenware, clay or other materials that break easily."
"Reprobated" is the most serious level of condemnation used in Church law.
