Mary Magdalene
Question from Bohdan Szejner, STL on 5/9/2008:
Another question that has taken me by surprise today is the assertion that "Mary Magdalene is the same 'adulterous' woman Jesus forgave while she was about to be stoned, when He wrote something on sand with His finger." I was under the impression that this was a different woman, even though Mary Magdalene was also a great sinner, and was forgiven. Please indicate the biblical passage which points specifically to Mary Magdalene as the woman from the scene of "writing with the finger."
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/10/2008:
We do not know for certain who this woman was, though some ancient commentators--including Church Fathers--speculated that this could be the same woman as Mary Magdalene, prior to her conversion. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, the Mystic, revealed that Mary Magdalene had a number of lapses in her moral life before fully following Christ. Whether true or not we cannot be certain but she revealed that she was the same person, as I recall. Modern scholars tend to reject all such associations but then again, I am not impressed with the bias of many modern scholars.
God bless,
Father Echert
