Catholic Church position on sterilization of teen/unwed /poor mothers
Question from Robert C. Maguire on 5/9/2008:
Good Morning: I believe I know the answer to this question but just seek a formal conformation. I am a 65 year old,Catholic educated, born and raised and am a practising Catholic who is active in my Church. Recently on a local radio talk show a women, who happens to be a member of the Charleston County School Board called in to discuss society's ills. She suggested taking babies away from unfit parents and sterilization as a potentional solution. This would include teenage pregancies and babies born in poverty and out of wed lock. She said allow them to have maybe one baby then they would be required to be sterilized. I may be wrong but if its not a medical complication regarding the mother I do not belive the Catholic Church would consider sterilization of mothers as an acceptable, moral, solution to any type of social ills and would consider it a sinful action.
Sincerely Robert C. Maguire Have a Blessed Day
Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/9/2008:
Sounds like this woman works for the Communist Chinese government, or perhaps Planned Parenthood. Let her make her case before Jesus Christ on the day of her own judgment before the Son of Man...
To confirm your assumption, what she proposes is nothing short of evil, contrary to natural law and Church law.
Thanks, Robert
Father Echert
