Altar server

Question from anon on 5/28/2008:

Dear Fr. Mark Gantley,

I am an altar server but not an extraordinary minister. The priest who celebrated mass tonight asked me to bring one ciboria out of the tabernacle so that he could distribute the Eucharists to the people at mass. I did what he told me.

Is this a sin, venial or mortal? If this is a sin, I'm going to tell him I will definitely not do it any more. If this is only illicit, can I continue to do it then? I am desperate to know the answer. He may ask me to do that again soon.

Thank you very much for your help and God bless you.
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 6/4/2008:

Ordinarily Hosts consecrated at the same Mass are to be distributed during that Mass.

If the priest is giving out Holy Communion and then realizes that he is about to run out of Hosts, I don't see a problem of him asking you to bring him more Hosts in such an exceptional circumstance.

  1. Can the priest not break the hosts?
