One child policy in China

Question from Steve on 9/28/2007:

Hello,

A person was telling me that in China if a couple want more than one child all they have to do is pay the government some money. Is that all couples have to do if they want more than one child?

Thanks, Steve

Answer by Judie Brown on 9/29/2007:

Dear Steve

the official policy in China regarding the one child per family rule is not affected, as far as we know, by bribing officials. In 2005 the New England Journal of Medicine reported on this policy and you can read the entire analysis at http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/353/11/1171

The expert on this policy is Steven Mosher of Population Research Institute and you can read his report at http://www.pop.org/main.cfm?EID=699
