Holy Communion
Question from Ed Driscoll on 6/30/2008:
When going to Protistan churches for funerals I do not go to Holy Communion although invited becasue I am not sure of the beliefs of the church i am attending. If the domination believes it is just a simble is it just a simble.? Does the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ only when offered in Mass by a Catholic priest?
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 6/30/2008:
Protestants do not validly celebrate the Eucharist. Therefore, it is never permitted for a Catholic to receive communion in a Protestant service.
Other than Catholic, there are Churches that have valid Eucharist, such as the Orthodox. But Protestant ecclesial communities do not.
