Holy souls in purgatory

Holy souls in purgatory
Question from Tania on 7/1/2008:

I am trying to understand whether the holy souls in purgatory are able to pray. If yes, for whom do they pray? For each other? For us? May we ask for their intercession as we do the angels and saints?
Answer by Catholic Answers on 7/1/2008:

Tania--

Yes, possibly, yes, and yes. The only person for whom a soul in purgatory cannot pray and intercede is himself.

  1. This is information which I have on my website:

The Holy Souls in Purgatory are not able to pray for themselves or do anything at all to relieve their suffering: They rely on our prayers and efforts to help them. It is permissible to believe that they can pray for their benefactors.

St John Vianney said: "If one knew what we may obtain from God by the intercession of the Poor Souls, they would not be so much abandoned. Let us pray a great deal for them, they will pray for us".

St Theresa of Avila said that "She always obtained the favours which she asked from God, through the intercession of the Poor Souls in Purgatory".

I have put accounts of favours which the Holy Souls in Purgatory have obtained for their benefactors at the following link:
