Eastern Churches and Church laws

Eastern Churches and Church laws
Question from SJ on 7/10/2008:

Are the 22 Eastern Churches bound by the same canon laws as the Roman Catholic Church? Are they in communion with the Pope?
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 7/10/2008:

The Eastern ritual Catholic Churches are governed by the Code of Canons for the Eastern Church, not the Code of Canon Law that governs the Latin Church. Both codes were issued by the pope. There are some canons that are the same and others that are different, reflecting the differing traditions of east and west.

If a Church is Catholic, then it is under the pope and governed by one of the two codes.
