Catholics in an illicit marriage
Question from wayne on 7/1/2008:
Dear Gentleman, I understand that if a Catholic is not married in the Church (i.e. civil marriage only) they cannot partake in the Sacraments. Does this mean that they will be denied a deathbed confession?
Thank you.
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 7/7/2008:
If a person on his or her deathbed is willing to renounce the marriage, then he or she can receive the sacraments.
