Canadian archbishop protests honor for abortionist

Toronto, Jul. 2, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Archbishop of Toronto has issued a strong statement of protest against the decision to present a noted abortionist with Canada's highest national honor.

The Order of Canada has been "debased," Archbishop Thomas Collins said, by the naming of Dr. Henry Morgentaler as honoree.

"No person may presume to judge the soul of Henry Morgentaler," the archbishop said; "but it cannot be denied that the effect of his life's work has been a deadly assault upon the most helpless amongst us." The career of the abortionist contrasts sharply with the work of other medical pioneers, he said; Morgentaler's career "has brought not healing, but the destruction of the defenseless and immeasurable grief."

Archbishop Collins encouraged the people of Canada to protest the award for Morgenthaler, and asked the faithful to pray "that the scourge of abortion be lifted from our land."
