Brain Death
Question from wondering on 7/7/2008:
Dear Judy,
I have recently read (in a conservative Catholic publication) that harvesting organs from a certainly brain dead person is acceptable. How can this be? If the body is still alive -- not declared dead yet, how can we know that the soul has departed and that we can take organs for transplants. It seems premature to do so.
Thank you! Wondering

Dear Wondering
I have no idea where you read this, but it is not true. If the taking of a vital organ results in the death of a person, that is taking the life of that person.
Organ donation cannot be carried out at the cost of the donor's life.
