Question from laura on 2/25/2008:
I have a question, Fr Levis-a confession question. I know that catholics are required to go to confession at least once a year, at a minimum. Yet, someone, I think a priest told me that Pope John-Paul II recommended if possible to go weekly (I go at least once a month). Why? My other question is this, someone mentioned (he's baptist) that he is pretty sure that when a group of priests are together, they may talk among themselves about what they heard in confession. I said that they are not allowed to do that, even generally speaking (bringing up what without mentioning the name). Maybe I am wrong? Also, for murder, or other serious crimes, the priest isn't allowed to break the seal, just for part of the penance to get the penitent to turn oneself in to the police. He said (the baptist family member) that the priest should anonomously call the police. I said that I never thought about that even though the priest isn't allow to do that, what is stopping him? The family member is a retired air force master sergeant and a sheriff deputy. Gave me a lot to think about. So, my question is, if a priest hearing confessions heard a murder confession, and although he isn't allow under any circumstances to break the seal of confession, what is stopping him from making an anon phone call to the cops? How could I best explain this to my family member-he has no issues whatsoever with the catholic faith at all-just bringing up some good points? Thanks, Father-laura
Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 2/25/2008:
Laura, A confessor hearing the confession of a murderer will try hard to convince the murderer to surrender himself to the Law. What ever course the murderer decides on, the priest can never, never, never tell anybody what he knows. He cannot tell the Law either. Perhaps the Law might try to force him by censure or imprisonment even by death, no priest can reveal what has been told him by the murderer. Notice, Laura, in the 70's and 80's how many priests gave up their vocation as priests, but notice how perfectly all of them bind themselves to their vow of maintaining this seal. None of them broke it. Fr. Bob Levis
