Question from Ed on 2/28/2008:
This isn't quite a question, but I was wondering what your input was. I was praying my rosary this morning, and was praying the Joyful mysteries. It occurred to me that one argument that I hear from some non-Catholics, and some Catholics too, is that there is nothing in the Bible about abortion or when life begins; conception or later. But as I thought about it, this came to mind. I don't know how quickly Mary went to see Elizabeth, but Jesus was obviously not born yet. If He were not yet alive, then the whole exchange between Elizabeth and Mary about John leaping in the womb, and our belief that John was cleansed of Original Sin at that moment makes no sense. If Jesus was not a living person in the womb, then that would be like saying His body was present, but not His soul, and I was taught a long time ago that the only time that the body and soul are separated is at death, which is a consequence of Original Sin.

Dear Ed
You are correct, of course. And if you want to read a marvelous book that is a reflect on the story of Christ in His mother's womb and what a miracle it is that God sent His Son to us by way of his mother's womb, I recommend "Redeemer in the Womb" by John Saward.
