Chalice metal
Question from Anna Daily on 3/4/2008:
The priest in my parish, who happens to be the dean of our deanery, insists on using a wooden, ceramic or pewter chalice during lent. He told his assoc. pastor that it is to remind us all of the sacrifices of lent that we should all make. I know this is wrong, yet, I don't know what to do about it. The assoc. has moved on to a new parish. He was not able to get our pastor to change his mind anyway. I would normally go to the dean, I feel like a tattletale going further up the chain to question this. What would you suggest I do? How can I show this priest that the rubrics call for precious metal all of the time for the Blessed Sacrament? Thank you, Anna
Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 3/5/2008:
Anna, Ask this good priest why he offers Mass with shoes on his feet. He would look and feel more like Jesus as He walked on the earth. The most precious blood of Jesus belongs in the most precious cup available, of gold if possible, not of wood, pewter, or plastic. I knew of a young priest friend who only offered the Mass in the cellar of the rectory, and barefooted. ' Just like Jesus! I thinkeventually he left the Priesthood. Fr. Bob Levis
