Ten commandments
Question from john jones on 2/15/2008:
why did the catholic religion take away the second commandment, which says do not worship false idols, and why do they bow and pray to statues, also why do they not keep saturday as the sabbath day.
Answer by David Gregson on 3/5/2008:
What Protestants regard as the second commandment, based on the verse divisions of Exodus 20:3&4 (cf. Deuteronomy 5:7&8), Catholics regard as part of the first commandment. In the original Hebrew, the text wasn't divided into verses. Verse divisions weren't added till the 16th century. It seems clear that the prohibition against worshiping images is the same as the commandment against worshiping other gods.
Catholics pray to the persons represented by statues, not to the statues themselves. And praying isn't necessarily worship. If it's addressed to God, it may be worship, but if addressed to a Saint, it's the same as asking.
From the time of the Apostles, the Lord's Day was celebrated on Sunday rather than Saturday, to honor the Lord's Resurrection (cf. Acts 20:7; 1 Cor 16:2).
