Question from Martha on 2/15/2008:
Hello, Do we know what tribe or house Blessed Mother Mary is from? Is she from the House of David like her husband Joseph? I know that it was prophecied that the Messiah was to come from the line of David and I've always wondered if that comes through his bloodline via Mary or through His adoption by Joseph. Thank you. Martha
Answer by Matthew Bunson on 2/29/2008:
Unfortunately, few details are known with certainty about the family of Mary from the New Testament. Her parents are not named in the canonical texts; however, in apocryphal sources her parents are named Joachim and Anne. We know that she was related to Elizabeth, wife of the priest Zechariah and of the lineage of Aaron; hence Elizabeth was of the tribe of Levi (see Luke 1:5 and 1:36). It has been suggested that Mary was perhaps also of the House of David and so of the tribe of Judah, like Joseph.
