EWTN.com - adoration outside Mass: "adoration outside Mass
Question from Loretta on 8/22/2008:
Our Parish is blessed to have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration 24/7. The Chapel is separate from the rest of the Church.
My question is during Holy Mass which is in another part of the Church, one adorer is seeing running down the isle to receive Communion. Is this proper? Can a person who is in adoration, receive Communion when they do not participate for Holy Mass?
Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 10/2/2008:
This is not licit.
Holy Communion needs to be received as a part of a liturgical rite -- ordinarily Mass. There might be circumstances when a person receives outside Mass -- e.g., if sick in the hospital. However, even in those situations, there is a ritual to be followed, including a reading of God's word, the Lord's Prayer, etc."
