Mary, ever virgin

Question from BS on 9/30/2007:

Did Mary and Joseph have more children after Mary gave birth to Jesus? If so, how many? If Mary gave birth to other children, how is it that she remains "ever virgin"? Is there any scripture that explains this? Thank you!

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 9/30/2007:

Mary remained ever Virgin--she and St. Joseph NEVER had relations. The only Child she bore was our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. There are biblical texts that would support what the Church firmly believes and teaches on this, to include the fact that our Lord entrusted His Mother to an Apostle (St. John), which would be unthinkable, if he had siblings.

God bless,

Father Echert
