As clashes between anti-government protesters and Egyptian police intensified on Jan. 28, some Coptic Orthodox Christians disregarded their church's call for peaceful non-involvement – in hopes that the possible abdication of President Hosni Mubarak could advance the cause of their freedom.
Professor Emad Shahin, a political scientist at the University of Notre Dame, specializes in Islamic affairs and has been monitoring the Egyptian situation closely. He told CNA that many Coptic Christians were joining with Muslims to express their frustration with three decades of authoritarian rule.
“The different statements that called for today's demonstrations were calling on participants to come 'from the mosques and the churches,' to go to public squares,” Professor Shahin explained. “We have seen evidence that some Copts have been participating in the demonstrations.”

Workplace Immigration Raids
Speaking for the U.S. bishops, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles told the House Judiciary Committee on Jan. 26 that the country should not return to a model of immigration enforcement based on workplace raids. Instead, he urged lawmakers to seek immigration reform that is both humane and just.

The Archdiocese of New York's failure to transfer Sheen's body to a cathedral tomb in his hometown of Peoria had upset the diocese and stalled plans to create a national shrine for him there.

One of the articles of indictment in John Cornwell's very hostile book about the late pope was that this was 'an early item of poor judgment', since Pio Nono 'was chiefly famous for calling the First Vatican Council, which declared the dogma of papal infallibility and papal primacy, although he was known for his infamous syllabus of errors which denounced democracy, pluralism, workers' unions and newspapers. The Rev. Jerry Bruggeman's chalice was stolen and buried before being returned by a man who found it at an antique store. The Rev. Jerry Bruggeman wept the other day when he saw his golden chalice.
It was stolen 22 years ago. Bruggeman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was given the chalice, engraved with his name, on the day of his ordination in 1949. He used it for 40 years during the Eucharist until it was taken from a cabinet of chalices at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

One or more vandals recently spray painted a misspelled phrase 'Kill the Cathlics' on two different Catholic churches in California.
The phrase appeared on St. Boniface Catholic Church in Anaheim and at St. Thomas More Parish in Irvine, about 20 miles away. Both incidents were discovered on the morning of Jan. 11.
Church officials are working with police to find who is responsible.

Fueling the belief that the pro-homosexual Lavender Mafia is alive and well within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in America, the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) has been conspicuously silent on condemning the Obama Administration and the overwhelmingly Democrat support in Congresss for the repeal of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' regulation that prohibited openly homosexual individuals from serving in the Armed Forces.
One of the few, if not only, Catholic prelate to speak out against the repeal has been the leader of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, Archbishop Timothy Broglio.

Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross
The Mount Soledad Memorial Cross is unconstitutional because it conveys the message of “state-endorsed religion,” a federal appeals court ruled on Jan. 4.
The 29-foot cross, located in a San Diego public park near the suburb of La Jolla, was dedicated in 1954 to honor veterans of the Korean War.
A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ unanimous ruling said the decision was in no way “meant to undermine the importance of honoring our veterans.”
'Indeed, there are countless ways that we can and should honor them, but without the imprimatur of state-endorsed religion.'
The court said modifications could be made to render the cross constitutional, but it did not specify those changes.

The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes.
Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called 'opting out' - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to 'opt in.'
