Food of the Day

Lord, what will Thou have me to do? Here is the true token of a soul absolutely perfect: when one has succeeded in leaving behind his own will to such a degree as no longer to seek, to aim, or to desire to do what he would will, but only what God wills.

Christians in Egypt!

As clashes between anti-government protesters and Egyptian police intensified on Jan. 28, some Coptic Orthodox Christians disregarded their church's call for peaceful non-involvement – in hopes that the possible abdication of President Hosni Mubarak could advance the cause of their freedom.

Professor Emad Shahin, a political scientist at the University of Notre Dame, specializes in Islamic affairs and has been monitoring the Egyptian situation closely. He told CNA that many Coptic Christians were joining with Muslims to express their frustration with three decades of authoritarian rule.

“The different statements that called for today's demonstrations were calling on participants to come 'from the mosques and the churches,' to go to public squares,” Professor Shahin explained. “We have seen evidence that some Copts have been participating in the demonstrations.”

Food of the Day

We believe in the love of God for us. To believe in love is everything. It is not enough to believe in the Truth. We must believe in Love and Love is our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. That is the faith that makes our Lord loved. Ask for this pure and simple faith in the Eucharist. Men will teach you; but only Jesus will give you the grace to believe in Him. You have the Eucharist. What more do you want?

-- St. Peter Julian Eymard

Food of the Day

The price of Divine Love is not to be appreciated; for it suffices to obtain the Kingdom of Heaven, and the love of Him who has loved us so much merits the highest degree of our love.

Workplace Immigration Raids

Speaking for the U.S. bishops, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles told the House Judiciary Committee on Jan. 26 that the country should not return to a model of immigration enforcement based on workplace raids. Instead, he urged lawmakers to seek immigration reform that is both humane and just.

'Immigration is ultimately a humanitarian issue, because it impacts the basic human rights and dignity of the human person,' he explained in his written testimony. 'The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops believes that the humanitarian costs of workplace raids are immeasurable, and unacceptable in a civilized society.' Archbishop Gomez chairs the conference's Committee on Migration.

Fulton Sheen's Beatification

The Diocese of Peoria has resumed its promotion of Archbishop Fulton Sheen's cause for beatification despite its dispute with the Archdiocese of New York over the final resting place of the great evangelist's remains.

In November 2010 the diocese said it was no longer in a position to continue its nine years of work on Archbishop Sheen's beatification and canonization. The Archdiocese of New York's failure to transfer Sheen's body to a cathedral tomb in his hometown of Peoria had upset the diocese and stalled plans to create a national shrine for him there.

Now Bishop Daniel R. Jenky of Peoria has announced that the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation has resumed its efforts to advance Sheen's cause.

Pro-life Vigil Mass In Dc

Around 10,000 Catholics, many of them young people from schools around the nation, met to pray for an end to abortion at a pro-life vigil Mass in D.C. on the eve of the annual March for Life.

The Opening Mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Jan. 23. On Jan. 24, crowds thronged to the D.C. area to participate in the annual March for Life, which occurs near the date that Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the U.S. in 1973.

Catholic Families For America

CatholicVote.org president Brian Burch announced on Jan. 24 that grassroots political group Catholic Families for America will now join their growing family of organizations.

The latest move broadens the widening scope of CatholicVote.org's initiatives. CatholicVote - which describes itself as a lay movement of committed Catholics and patriotic Americans - will now collaborate with and have the support of Catholic Families of America, a group oriented towards shaping public policy in favor of pro-life values.

Movie 'The Rite'

Father Gary Thomas, whose real life experience as an exorcist-in-training is chronicled in the highly anticipated movie 'The Rite,' praised the film for its positive portrayal of the Church and for its witness to the power of faith.

The movie, starring Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and newcomer Colin O'Donoghue, is loosely based on Fr. Thomas' experience traveling to Rome and studying under an Italian exorcist in 2005.

Marrying in Church is a right only for those who believe in Christian marriage

The importance of the canonical and pastoral preparation for marriage focus of words addressed by Pope Benedict XVI to the Roman Rota. The bride and groom should be aware of and want this act that ultimately aims to holiness of life. This also to avoid future annulments.

Getting married in church is a right only if you believe in 'true marriage' that is, an act for the realization of the 'integral good, human and Christian, of the spouses and of their future children, ultimately projected towards the holiness of their lives'. From here, follows the importance of preparation for Christian marriage, also to avoid annulments, which were at the heart of Benedict XVI address delivered today to members of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota, received at the beginning of the judicial year.

Syllabus of Errors

The recent declaration of the beatification of Pope John Paul II reminded me of one attack on him sparked off by another beatification, that of Pius IX. One of the articles of indictment in John Cornwell's very hostile book about the late pope was that this was 'an early item of poor judgment', since Pio Nono 'was chiefly famous for calling the First Vatican Council, which declared the dogma of papal infallibility and papal primacy, although he was known for his infamous syllabus of errors which denounced democracy, pluralism, workers' unions and newspapers. A fine exemplar for the 21st century to be sure!'

pro-life group's first whistleblower

A pro-life group's first whistleblower award will go to a former clinic worker in Massachusetts who provided evidence that an abortionist's negligence played a role in the death of a woman injured in an abortion.

Abortionist Rapin Osathanondh ran an abortion clinic in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the case of a woman, 22-year-old Laura Hope Smith, who died in 2007 after an abortion he performed.

possible second miracle to John Paul II

The prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, has cautioned against rushing to attribute a possible second miracle to John Paul II.

The cardinal refused to confirm the accuracy of reports of a second miracle, but stated, 'only at the end, when the investigation is over, will it be appropriate to speak about it.'

A second miracle would open the door to his canonization.

halice was stolen and buried

The Rev. Jerry Bruggeman's chalice was stolen and buried before being returned by a man who found it at an antique store. The Rev. Jerry Bruggeman wept the other day when he saw his golden chalice.

It was stolen 22 years ago. Bruggeman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was given the chalice, engraved with his name, on the day of his ordination in 1949. He used it for 40 years during the Eucharist until it was taken from a cabinet of chalices at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

The chalice was returned to him earlier this month, and after some refurbishing, it looks nearly as good as new. 'Miracles still happen,' Bruggeman, 87, said.

abortion doctor has been charged

A Philadelphia abortion doctor has been charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a woman patient and seven babies who prosecutors say were born alive and then killed with scissors. The charges against Dr. Kermit Gosnell follow a long grand jury investigation.

District Attorney Seth Williams says state regulators ignored complaints and failed to visit the clinic since 1993. Williams says the women were subjected to squalid and barbaric conditions at Gosnell's Women's Medical Society, which was shut down last year. Gosnell has been named in at least 10 malpractice suits, including one over the death of a woman who died of sepsis and a perforated uterus.

same-sex attraction

Debates about homosexuality often include the claim that those who experience same-sex attraction are underserved in the community.

What you almost never will see, however, is people noting that the homosexual agenda further marginalizes people who experience SSA but who wish to live chastely. The majority of individuals who experience SSA but choose to lead chaste lives do not seek public attention because they are focused on living their lives, not drawing attention to their struggle.

Kennedy's Inauguration Speech

Americans believe that key themes from President Kennedy's inauguration speech are still important more than 50 years later, a new survey says.

Kennedy, the first Catholic U.S. president, was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal charitable organization which in 2010 funded restoration work on the assassinated president's tomb. The tomb at Arlington National Cemetery bears inscriptions from his January 20, 1961 presidential inaugural speech.

Pro-life Women's Clinic In US

Mexican producer and actor Eduardo Verastegui has announced that his organization, Mantle of Guadalupe, is planning to build the largest pro-life women's clinic in the United States.

Verastegui's announcement came during the first-ever gala held by Mantle of Guadalupe and Catholic Charities of Los Angeles.

The gala took place Jan. 15 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills and brought together 300 noted guests, including Philip Rivers from the San Diego Chargers, Mexican actor Karyme Lozano, actor Sean Astin from 'The Lord of the Rings,' violinist Roddy Chong and motivational speaker Nick Vujicic.

Future Pope Secretly Ordained

In an interview with L’Osservatore Romano, Cardinal Jozef Tomko discussed his decades of friendship with Pope John Paul II. The two met in 1969, when the future Pontiff was Archbishop of Krakow and Cardinal Tomko was a Slovak priest.

The 86-year-old cardinal told the Vatican newspaper that Archbishop Wojtyla secretly ordained Slovak seminarians whom Czechoslovakia’s Communist regime refused to allow their ordination.

Acquire National Catholic Register

Eternal Word Television Network, the world's largest religious media provider, announced on Jan. 19 that it would be acquiring the National Catholic Register from its current owners, the Legionaries of Christ.

'I believe the Register has a bright future and fits quite well under the EWTN umbrella,' EWTN's President and CEO Michael Warsaw told CNA, announcing the planned acquisition from the network's headquarters in Birmingham, Ala. 'Our goal is not only to continue the Register's legacy, but also to build upon it and to give it a platform for growth and expansion.'

Chicago exorcist

As the official exorcist for the Archdiocese of Chicago, it's the Rev. Jeffrey Grob's job to expel demons from those cursed by the devil. But when it comes to demonic possession, Grob is the first to admit he's a skeptic.

When he receives the call - 'Father, I am possessed by the devil' - he doesn't drop everything, grab a black bag and run to the victim to say some prayers.

'If only it was that easy,' said the 49-year-old Wisconsin native, who spoke Friday to a crowd of more than 100 people at a Catholic Citizens of Illinois forum titled 'The Consummate Deceiver: The Devil in the Modern World.'

Instead, he approaches with caution. According to the Roman Catholic Church, exorcism is a rite performed only by a select number of priests to drive out evil spirits that, on rare occasions, can infiltrate human beings.

Abortion Caused Over 300,000

The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer announced that three experts will be available for interviews to discuss the impact of the abortion-breast cancer (ABC) link on the Roe v. Wade generation during the month of January. Their contact information and their quotes are available below.

Karen Malec, the Coalition's president, said, 'During the last 21 months, four epidemiological studies and one review reported an ABC link. [1-5] One study included National Cancer Institute branch chief Louise Brinton as co-author. [3] We count nearly 50 published epidemiological studies since 1957 reporting a link. Biological and experimental studies also support it.

Vandals Tag Two California Churches

One or more vandals recently spray painted a misspelled phrase 'Kill the Cathlics' on two different Catholic churches in California.

The phrase appeared on St. Boniface Catholic Church in Anaheim and at St. Thomas More Parish in Irvine, about 20 miles away. Both incidents were discovered on the morning of Jan. 11.

Church officials are working with police to find who is responsible.

Sgt. Rick Martinez, public information officer for the Anaheim Police Department, told CNA there are still no suspects in the case.

Husband's Executioners

Members of the Apostolic Sisters of Christ Crucified are praying for a miracle to move their foundress one step closer to beatification.

Maria Seiquer Gaya founded the religious order following the death of her husband during the Spanish Civil War.

The Apostolic Sisters of Christ Crucified are present in both Spain and Latin America.

Maria Seiquer was born in 1891 in Murcia, Spain. In 1914, she married Angel Romero, a doctor known for his honesty and dedicated service. The couple built a public chapel on their ranch in Villa Pilar where Maria taught catechism to children and her husband provided free care for the poor once a week.

John Paul II On 1 May

On 1 May, the second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, Benedict XVI will preside at the rite of beatification for John Paul II in the Vatican.

According to a note released by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, 'today 24 January, Benedict XVI, during an audience granted to Cardinal Angelo Amato S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, authorised the dicastery to promulgate the decree of the miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Servant of God John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla). This concludes the process which precedes the rite of beatification.

Causes Of Saints

Today, during a private audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Pope authorised the congregation to promulgate the following decrees:

MIRACLES

- Venerable Servant of God John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla), Polish Supreme Pontiff (1920-2005).

- Venerable Servant of God Antonia Maria Verna, Italian foundress of the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception (1773-1838).

- Venerable Servant of God Giuseppe Toniolo, Italian layman and father (1845-1918).

Unborn twins

Unborn twin babies socialize as early as week 14 of gestation, a new study has shown. Italian researcher Dr. Umberto Castiello of the University of Padova and associates used an advanced method of ultrasonography, which enables the movements of the babies to be recorded over time in 3D, to study five pairs of twins from a sample of low-risk pregnant women attending the Institute of Child Health I.R.C.C.S. Burlo Garofolo.

The purpose of the study was to see how twins interacted with each other in their mothers' wombs and to determine if the interaction was intentional or accidental.

Skyrocketing Abortion Rate

At times it seems that some UN policy makers want the world to follow the US when it comes to abortion. This is what it would look like. Forty-one per cent of all pregnancies in New York City end in abortion. The grim statistic has activated new pro-life initiatives in the metropolis.

Last week, religious leaders called for a unified effort to lower the number of abortions in the city. Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel of Agudath Israel of America challenged, 'We've been hearing for many years from pro-choice supporters that abortion should be safe, legal and rare. If that's the goal, we've clearly, abysmally failed, especially here in New York City.'

Beatification For Pope John Paul II

Vatican officials have concluded that a miraculous healing credited to the intercession of Pope John Paul II is authentic.

The decision clears the way for the Church to declare the late Pope 'blessed,' the final stage on the road to sainthood. The Pope's beatification could take place as early as April 2, the sixth anniversary of his death, according to veteran Vatican analyst Andrea Tornielli, who broke the news in the Jan. 12 edition of the Italian newspaper, Il Giornale.

same-sex 'marriage

London is still slowly recovering from six years of war with Germany. Hundreds of thousands of British soldiers are dead. British cities are in ruins. As newsreels expose fresh horrors from the Nazi death camps, the British people wonder, 'Is there no end to German atrocities?'

Thus, it was not surprising that many Brits recoiled when they heard about a memorial service at London's Holy Trinity Church-not for England's war dead, but for a German. The service would be broadcast on the BBC. Many wondered: Could there be such a thing as a good German, worthy of such an honor?

New American Bible

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced it has canonically approved the publication of New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE).

The first edition of the New American Bible (NAB), published in 1970, immediately became familiar to Catholics in the United States because of its use in the lectionary at Mass.

A revised translation of the New Testament, which appeared in the NAB’s second edition (1986), included more traditional diction (“blessed” replaced “happy” in the Beatitudes) but made concessions to horizontal and vertical inclusive language (the Holy Spirit was referred to as “it,” rather than “he.”)

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Fueling the belief that the pro-homosexual Lavender Mafia is alive and well within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in America, the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) has been conspicuously silent on condemning the Obama Administration and the overwhelmingly Democrat support in Congresss for the repeal of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' regulation that prohibited openly homosexual individuals from serving in the Armed Forces.

One of the few, if not only, Catholic prelate to speak out against the repeal has been the leader of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, Archbishop Timothy Broglio.

It's been previously reported that the archbishop explained that while individuals may have a legal right to declare their sexual preferences, they have no comparable 'right' to serve in the military at the same time.

Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross

The Mount Soledad Memorial Cross is unconstitutional because it conveys the message of “state-endorsed religion,” a federal appeals court ruled on Jan. 4.

The 29-foot cross, located in a San Diego public park near the suburb of La Jolla, was dedicated in 1954 to honor veterans of the Korean War.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ unanimous ruling said the decision was in no way “meant to undermine the importance of honoring our veterans.”

'Indeed, there are countless ways that we can and should honor them, but without the imprimatur of state-endorsed religion.'

The court said modifications could be made to render the cross constitutional, but it did not specify those changes.

porn will be blocked

THE UK Government is to combat the early sexualization of children by blocking internet pornography unless parents request it, it was revealed today.

The move is intended to ensure that children are not exposed to sex as a routine by-product of the internet. It follows warnings about the hidden damage being done to children by sex sites.

The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes.

Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called 'opting out' - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to 'opt in.'

A Christian mental health worker is facing the sack after giving two colleagues a leaflet warning of the physical and psychological damage some women suffer after having an abortion.

The case represents the latest example of Christians who have come into conflict with state employers after expressing their religious views at work.

Margaret Forrester passed the booklet to family planning staff at the health centre where she works because she felt that the NHS was not offering patients enough information about the risks associated with terminating a pregnancy.

But Ms Forrester, 39, said she was suspended from her job as a psychological wellbeing practitioner based in Westminster because managers at Central North West London Mental Health Trust disagreed with her personal beliefs.
